i was at two lovers point recently; it is a tourist spot, with an amazing view of the western coast of guam and the waters beyond. the legend is that there was a beautiful young mestiza girl who was promised to a spanish captain; she was in love with a poor chamoru boy, of whom her parents disapproved. the spanish captain and his troops went to confront the couple, who ran to the cliff. as they were cornered, they tied their long hair together, and threw themselves into the waters below.

anyway, there's a new development at the point, dozens upon dozens of various locks locked onto the fence, apparently as some sort of symbol of love: couples write their names and little notes on the lock, and they shall be together for as love as the lock remains.



bowhaus encountered the italian version recently, and there are flickr photos of love padlocks around the world. i don't know. it's sort of romantic, but it's sort of sinister, too. i sort of love that there are some locks and tags that are obviously flimsier than others. i wonder if some couples intend it to be that way.
